Who are your customers?

The majority of our customers are in the industrial or commercial sector, but really, our customer can be anyone. For example, we serve all of the following:

  • The family who is renovating their home and needs a place to store their furniture.
  • The snowbird who wants to put their stuff in storage for the winter.
  • The construction team who needs to store their tools and heavy equipment.
  • The business whose warehouse has run out of space to store inventory.
  • The oil and gas company who needs to work out of a temporary office.

The type of customer we serve and the range of space solutions we provide is practically universal.

For example, say we have a customer come to us requesting an office space that is 40 feet long and 56 feet wide. In that case, we would adjoin 7 containers and open them up into one internal space that forms one huge office. If they want a story, we could stack another row of 7 on top of that. Basically, you bring us an idea and we will try to find a way to make it work.

What areas does Container King serve?

We serve the Canadian cities of Edmonton and Calgary and the surrounding Alberta area. We hope to serve British Columbia in the near future. We are owned by PacVan, one of the largest modular-mobile-storage companies, with over 50 offices in the United States.

What is your most popular product?

Our most well-known product is the standard 20-foot and 40-foot container. It’s popular purely by demand because it’s been around for 40 years. It’s familiar.

But our most popular product is our modified container, specifically, the container office, the tool crib, and the office/tool crib combo. These containers have been retrofitted with insulation, HVAC, shelving and other amenities that are customized to meet the specific needs of our customers.

Mobile office delivery.

What is the delivery process?

In most cases, we can deliver a container within the same day of the request. Unlike our competitors, who use their own trucks and often experience a backlog in delivery scheduling, we use trucks from a number of different companies to ensure that we can get our products to our customers in a timely manner. Our containers are delivered on either tilt decks or side loader trucks, depending on the dimensions of the container. Our delivery charge is determined by the hour for all container deliveries.

Some questions we ask before delivery:

  • How wide is the entrance to your driveway?
  • Is the road to your property a single, double or dual road?
  • Where do you want the container placed on your property?
  • Which direction do you want the doors facing?

Is there any site prep required before delivery?

There is little to no site prep required for most container deliveries. The most important factor is making sure the ground is level enough so that the doors of your container will open properly.

We don’t recommend placing the container directly on the ground. It’s best to elevate it with a 4×4 or 4×6 on each end of the container. This allows air flow so that your floor won’t rot and it also helps keep the container level.

What differentiates you from your competitors?

One major difference between us and our competitors is that we encourage our customers to come and look at our containers before they rent or buy. 80% of our customers actually do so. Most people want to know exactly what they’re getting before they buy.

But many of our competitors don’t let their customers inspect the actual containers before signing a contract. The supplier orders the product from their available stock and the customer gets whatever they have without having seen it in person. It can be a risky deal.

How do containers compare with other temporary storage solutions?

Many of the temporary storage solutions out there just aren’t theft-proof or weather-proof. A thief could easily break into a POD (Portable On Demand Storage) with a pair of scissors. Even with a heavy duty lock, it’s not that difficult to pick up the entire unit and load it onto the back of a truck. If you want to know that your stuff will be safe and dry, you want to go with a steel container.

What should a customer know before shopping for a container?

Two things:

1. Condition

Find out exactly what you are getting before you buy. Customers who find a great deal online and order a container without ever seeing it in person often end up with a container that doesn’t look anything like the picture posted online, or in the condition they had expected. But they’ve bought it, now it’s theirs. That’s the risk you’re going to take when you price shop for a quick and easy deal online.

2. Usage

In many cases, the customer doesn’t know what kind of container or size they need. Depending on how you plan to use the container, you may not need the top of the line, as-new container. The guy that is just looking for a place to store his tires during the winter so the sun doesn’t ruin them doesn’t need an as-new container. Instead, the as-is container, which usually has a bit of wear and tear from years of usage, is a great fit for that guy. It doesn’t matter if it leaks a bit. But the woman who is storing her grandmother’s antique furniture will probably want to invest in a high-quality container, if for nothing but peace of mind, knowing that her stuff will be safe and dry. Bottom line: Think about the value of the items you are going to store. Let that help determine what kind of container you need.

“We don’t sell containers, we sell space. When you start to think of the product as space, then it becomes a solution.”

Cory Banks, Branch Manager of Sales & Operations, Container King (Calgary, AB)

Do you offer new and used containers?

Yes. If you’re purchasing, we have everything from as-is to as-new. If you’re renting, we generally only offer as-new containers because we want to ensure that you are getting the highest quality of container.

What trends do you see in the container industry?

Containers have become less of a niche and more of a mainstream solution to space. The more containers get out in the market, the more people start to view containers as normal. As it becomes a more accepted product in the community, there is no longer the negative response of: that’s an ugly container. Instead, people say: that’s a cool and modern repurposed container.
