How are storage containers priced?
Storage containers are usually priced on size, but some vendors offer discounts if you purchase multiple containers from them at the same time. Keep in mind that the price of storage containers varies from dealer to dealer, so use these prices as general estimates, and be sure to get actual prices from your storage container dealer of choice.
You can purchase a basic 20’ storage container for $1,000 to $4,000 ore more, depending on where you are.
A 40’ storage container, despite the huge increase in space, is not more expensive, ranging from $1,400 to $5,400—so even if you don’t anticipate needing the extra space right away, it might be the most cost-effective route down the road.
However, these prices are for new storage containers. You can save considerable money on purchasing used storage containers. Vendors purchase previously used containers and refurbish them—usually by making sure they are water tight, replacing any broken parts, and giving them a fresh coat of paint. The containers look new, but cost 30% to 50% less than new containers—what’s not to love?
Depending on the size and features, you can expect to pay $800 to $3,500 for a refurbished storage container. You may be able to find “as-is” used storage containers that have not been refurbished at all for even less, but those often don’t come with guarantees, and no repairs have been done. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may end up paying more to get it into usable condition—so make sure you examine it carefully for leaks, structural, and security defects.
If you are leasing your storage container, then you can expect to pay $75 to $150 a month, for an 18 or 24 month lease. The payment could be more or less depending on the age of the container, your location, and its condition. The longer your lease period, typically the less the monthly payment will be for your storage container.
Short-term rentals of storage containers can cost $3 - $10 a day, and since the rental is charged by the day, you are less restricted by strict time deadlines. However, daily renting can get expensive if it goes over a couple months. Be honest with your storage container dealer about your expected delays, as they will be able to suggest the best plan for your needs.
Also, don’t forget to factor in the delivery fee into the expense of renting!
