Poorly functioning HVAC systems. If the HVAC system is not working well (or at all), this could mean that there is little ventilation in the portable classrooms.
Poor acoustics. Loud ventilation systems may work well as ventilation systems, but we must remember that a classroom’s primary function is a place of learning. If the ventilation in the portable classroom makes it difficult for students and teachers to communicate, learning may be negatively affected.
Off gassing. Chemicals in the pressed wood and other building materials may leach into air. (Processed wood may contain particularly high concentrations of formaldehyde.) This is a concern for all homes, but because portable classrooms are occupied soon after assembly and installation, the materials do not have as much of a chance to off-gas.
Leaks and mold growth. If there are drips or leaks in the portable classroom, the HVAC systems may not be able to keep the humidity down enough to avoid mold growth. Depending on the type of mold, there are serious implications for the health of the portable classroom’s occupants.
