Ooops!: 5 Common Mobile Office Mistakes to Avoid

Introduction

Ideally, the only thing more pleasant than the price of your mobile office would be the pleasant work environment it creates for your employees.  If everything is done right the temperature should be perfect, the smell fresh and the workspace convenient.

However, this vision of the perfect mobile office can disappear into a nightmare of sloping floors, stale air and soaring temperatures if you aren’t careful.  Read on to find out five easy ways you can insure the quality of your mobile office installation and environment.

Mistake #1: A Poorly Leveled Mobile Office Site

The site for your mobile office needs to be properly leveled (flattened out); otherwise you could end up with a mobile office that sits, tilted, on uneven ground. Not only would your pencils refuse to stay on your desk, it could pose problems for the Americans with Disabilities Access Guidelines too.

Mistake #2: Not Confirming Mobile Office Size

Many vendors will include the length of the hitch (which is up to four feet!) in the size descriptions of their mobile offices.  In order to get an accurate idea of how much space you will be getting, make sure that your quotes do not include the length of the trailer.

Mistake #3: Improper Wiring

In this great age of information, we often take for granted Internet and phone accessibility.  However, because mobile offices are used for a variety of purposes in a variety of industries, it is important to double-check with your vendor that your mobile office unit meets your communication needs.  If you know that you will need hard-wired phones or a network inside, expect to allow extra expense for its installation.

Mistake #4: Inadequate HVAC

Many mobile office units are pre-used, and their age varies widely.  While smaller units typically come equipped with baseboard and through-wall air conditioning, the larger models often come with the much more effective and efficient central HVAC systems.  Some trailers even have the option of using propane heat, which is much easier on your pocketbook.  Check with your vendor to see which options are available to you.

The other factor in mobile office climate control is the insulation.  While almost all mobile offices come standard with some degree of insulation, depending on your climate and usage, it may be inadequate.  Again, make sure you go over the details of your mobile office’s insulation with your dealer.

Mistake #5: Poorly Planned Waste Treatment

If you want the “luxury” of a flushing toilet in your mobile office, you will need to hire additional help for plumbing installation.  Unless you plan to hook up your mobile office’s portable toilet to a sewer line, you will also need to contact additional help for a holding-tank installation.  It is a good idea to factor this additional cost into your mobile office budget because, (trust me), you will never want to deal with a sewage malfunction.

The more you educate yourself on the particulars of mobile offices, the more effective and discerning you will be when making a purchasing or leasing decision.  Remember that questions are free, but mistakes cost money and set-up fees and extras are where most companies make their money.  You can avoid costly mistakes and save by getting mobile office vendors to compete for your business.
